Episode 1: Faith – Prologue
Once upon a time, there lived beings known as Fables, and they lived happily ever after in the individual worlds of various fairy tale, folklore, nursery rhyme, and storybook known as The Homelands... or so they thought.
Centuries ago, many of these worlds were conquered by The Adversary. The refugees of their fallen kingdoms began to frantically search for a safe haven. A rumor about some sort of sanctuary world circulated among the Fables, and they – exiled from their kingdoms – escaped The Adversary’s control into their new home: the mundane world.
Sometime in the 1600s, the refugees founded a safe haven at a spot just north of New Amsterdam. Old King Cole was elected as their first mayor, and they served for many years. The city spread out, and two places were created: The Farm (a place for Fables that cannot pass as human) and Fabletown.
Currently, Fabletown was absorbed in the newly-named New York City. Now, our story begins with two new Fables, who are now moving back to Fabletown, and a catalyst…
It was a rather bright night, as New York City’s lights were on and cars were on the streets of NYC. We follow a taxi that drives what seemed to be two people into a small community… which is well-known to the two people as Fabletown.
SCCRCH…The car makes a slow stop beside the sidewalk, and the car door opens. Once the door was open, a woman gets out of the car; following after her was a man. As soon as they were out of the car, the man closed the door as the woman looked around.
The woman who got out of the car first has straight, mid-neck length scarlet-red hair with bangs that frame both sides of her face. Her eyes are as amber as fire, and her expression is quite… emotionless, for a person arriving to their new home. She dons a long-sleeve, business-like cropped top with a strange pattern, making it represent what seemed to be fire. She wears blue jeans with a black belt, keeping her pants from falling from her hips, and she wears a pair of black, high-heeled boots. On her hands, oddly enough, she wears black gloves. The most notable features on her are a choker around her neck and a strange birthmark that look as if it was a tattoo. Her choker is black, and has a small red ruby in the center; as for the tattoo, it looks like a red rose that is engulfed in flames.
As for the man, he is a tall individual that has straight, crimson-red hair; oddly enough, the front part of his hair goes up, making it look like fire. His eyes, compared to the woman, are royal blue. He dons a white, short-sleeved, button-up shirt with black dress pants and black dress shoes. On his right leg, he has a gun holster where what seemed to be a pistol is kept in its place.
Both the man and the woman walked to the back of the taxi, and as the trunk opens up, they grab their respective luggage. The man grabbed the luggage that had the name “Edan”; the woman grabbed two luggage, and one of them has “Amber Rose” on it while the other had “Ambrose” written in what seems to be white Sharpie. The man – who is now known as Edan by the look of the name on his luggage – closed the trunk, and signaled the driver that they got their luggage.
VROOM…! With a small wave, the driver drove away from Amber and Edan. Amber looked at the place they stopped in front of, which happens to be stairs that lead to a bar that is currently called “Trip-Trap”. With a shrug of her shoulders, Amber walked downstairs with her luggage in her hand, leaving Edan to follow behind her.
Location Name: The Trip-Trap Bar
City Area: The Bronx
Upon entering the bar, Amber looked around and took notice of the place. This bar had pictures and what seemed to be motivational posters on the wall, a pool table, and… well, a bar with many spirits, liquors, and alcohol. As Amber and Edan walked over to the bar, they noticed three people.
The first person they noticed was the bartender, and happens to be the owner of Trip-Trap. She has white hair, grey eyes that have eyeshadow on the lids of her eyes, and is light-skinned. She has what seems to be a butterfly-like tattoo that goes from her chest to her back, which is almost covered by the brown halter-dress. She has bracelets on both of her wrists, and her nails seem to be painted.
The second stranger they noticed was a man who sat at the bar and drank a cup of what seemed to be alcohol. He has navy-blue hair that is slicked back and hazel eyes; he seems to have somewhat of a goatee on his chin. He has two earrings on his left ear (the earlobe and the top of his ear, to be exact). He dons a brown jacket above a white T-shirt, and wears this with blue jeans, and normal shoes.
The third and final stranger seems to be rather mysterious to Edan but somewhat familiar to Amber. The man’s body is covered thanks to the red cloak, so he’s hard to identify.
Amber and Edan walked to the bar where the Fables are at now, and as Amber sat down, Edan walked over to his seat – which is next to Amber – and as he proceeds to sit down…
FWOOP! Edan’s bar seat was pulled away thanks to the man cloaked in red, and Edan ended up fall to the ground with a THUD!! Amber looked at Edan as the navy-blue haired man, as well as the man cloaked in red, laughed at the sight. Amber – with a sigh – stood up and holds out her hand to Edan, who accepted the offer.
“You okay, Edan?” Amber asked as she pulled him off the ground. “You fell on your ass pretty hard.”
“I’ll live, sis,” Edan replied with a small smile as he leaned down and picked up his bar seat.
With that, Amber sat back in her seat, and as Amber sat back down in her seat as Edan sat in his seat. Amber looked around the area as Edan cleared his throat.
“Excuse me, ma’am,” Edan began to the white-haired bartender, catching her attention, “I would like to buy some drinks.”
“What would ya like, hon?” the bartender asked as she grabbed a few cups from under the bartop.
“I would like two shots of the Flaming Dragon,” Edan asked kindly. “It’s for my twin and me.”
“Coming right up,” the bartender said, and began to make the shots for the twins.
Amber looked at the man in the red cloak, and she tilted her head as if she was looking for the man’s face. Oddly enough, the man saw Amber and looked at her, causing Amber to straighten her head.
“What’re you looking at?” the red-cloaked man asked, curious to know about what Amber was doing.
“Lookin’ at you,” Amber replied as the bartender got the order ready for the twins. “Why?”
“Just curious…,” the red-cloaked man replied with a sigh, taking a sip of his drink.
“Here you go, guys,” the bartender said as she lit up the shots. “Have at it.”
Edan grabbed his shot, and fwoo… He blew the fire from the shot and drank it in a millisecond. As for Amber, she grabbed the shot, and GULP, with a quick swig, she drank the shot, fire and all.
“Phew…,” Amber huffed, not noticing the cloaked man staring at her in confusion. “That’s the best I’ve had in my days of drinking.”
“You can say that again,” Edan said as he paid the white-haired woman. “Let’s head out.”
“Yeah, yeah, I get the drill,” Amber said as she stands up, only to stop and look at the cloaked man. “But first… let’s see what’s under curtain number 1!”
FWOOSH!! Without warning, Amber grabbed the cloaked man’s cloak, revealing the man’s appearance.
The man under the cloak, now revealed, looks at Amber in shock and surprise. He has black hair with red eyes, and he dons a nice-looking suit of red. His pupils looks as if they belong to a snake. This man is known as…
“Well, hello there…,” Amber said with a smirk while Edan places a hand on where his gun seems to be located. “Aka Manto.”
“You little…!” the man now known as Aka Manto began to say, only to be halted by Edan pulling out his gun.
“Aka Manto,” Amber began as she took off her gloves, “you are under arrest for murdering five women. You have the right to remain silent. Now… we can do this the easy way or the hard way. Your choice.”
As if to answer Amber’s choice, Aka Manto quickly got up from his seat and made a mad dash out of the bar, all the while knocking the seat down. Cursing under her breath, Amber made a mad dash after the criminal, leaving Edan behind.
“GET BACK HERE, YOU!!” Amber shouted as she ran out, her brother preparing to follow behind her until-.
FWIP! THUD!! Sadly enough, before he could make the third step, Edan tripped over the chair Aka Manto was once sitting in and fell onto the ground face first.
Mumbling under his breath, Edan got up and shook his head as if to get whatever splinters he had on his face off him. He gets back up, dusts himself, and starts making a run after Amber.
“WAIT UP!!!” Edan shouted as he dashed out of the bar, trying to track his sister as if he was “following the leader”… only to have him get lost along the way.
Meanwhile, Amber made a mad dash after Aka Manto, the latter running through the alleyway as if it was the only means of escaping the former. Realizing that he’s not losing her, Manto knocked down obstacles such as trash cans, a ladder here and there, and even boxes.
With slight anger, Amber jumped over the trashcans, dodged the ladders, and ran through the boxes. As she does so, she leaves a burned handprint on each trashcan and burns through each box she runs into.
“Oh, screw this!” Aka Manto mumbled under his breath as he pulled out what seemed to be a smoke grenade.
Manto removed the pin and threw it at Amber, causing the chaser to halt in her tracks until BOOM!! The smoke grenade went off, leaving Amber to back up, cough, and try to find where the man ran off to, all while cursing under her breath.
With a laugh, he started to make a run, but once he turned the corner, bump! He ran right into a man.
“Damn!” Manto mumbled under his breath as he stumbled back from the bump. “Who the hell do you think you are, getting in my way?!”
The man he bumped into, ironically enough, looks all-too familiar to him and to the people of Fabletown. This man had brown hair and hazel eyes, and he has a five o’clock shadow when it comes to facial beards, and he has somewhat noticeable wrinkles on his forehead, as well as a noticeable scowl. He looks like a rugged man, wearing his sleeves rolled up, his tie loose, and the shirt untucked.
“Ah, Aka Manto…,” the man Manto bumped into said, causing Manto to shiver in fright. “Causing trouble again, I assume?”
“Out of all the people I had to bump into…!” Aka Manto mumbled as he balled his right hand to a fist. “Why’d it have to be you, Sheriff?!”
Before he could give the now-known Sheriff a minute to answer, Aka Manto aims a punch at the sheriff, only to have the latter grab him and pin him down to the light pole.
“Well, karma can be a bitch,” the Sheriff answered as he handcuffs Aka Manto to a light pole. “You’re under arrest for murdering five women.”
“Hey, hey!!!” a woman’s voice shouted, catching the Sheriff’s attention which makes him turn to Amber, who was now putting on the glove to her left hand while she huffed and puffed for air. “What the hell are you doing?! That was my prey!!”
“Sorry, ma’am,” the Sheriff shrugged as he pulled out a cigarette from his box, “but I caught him first.”
“And I was the one who found him first, sir,” Amber said with a growl as she glared at him.
“Let me guess…,” the Sheriff began before lighting his cigarette. “You’re new to Fabletown?”
“Gee, how’d you guess?” Amber grumbled under her breath as she fished through her pockets, only to pause and get a good look at the Sheriff. “Ah, shit. You’re that Bigby Wolf guy, aren’t you?”
“Good eye,” Bigby answered, blowing out the smoke he inhaled from the cigarette. “Now… what’re you doing, chasing down a guy like Aka Manto?”
“One, it was by my own choice,” Amber began as she pulled out what seemed to be a detective badge. “Two, I’m a detective who got hired earlier today. My brother and I recently moved here from the Farm. And three, can I have one of those cigarettes? I dropped my brand on the ground.”
With a nod from Bigby, he grabbed his cigarette box and pulled out one cigarette for Amber. Sighing, Amber carefully took the cigarette with her gloved hand and placed it in between her lips.
“Thanks, Sheriff,” Amber mumbled, and before he could offer to light the cigarette.
Snap! Fwooh~… Amber snaps her fingers on the right hand, and fire appeared on the tip of her thumb. She lit her cigarette and inhaled the smoke. This… throws Bigby off in slight surprise.
“What, Sheriff?” Amber asked as some smoke exhaled through her mouth, then she noticed the flame she had created. “Oh, don’t mind that. I’m a fire woman.”
“I see…,” Bigby answered as he tapped the cigarette butt twice, forcing the burned ashes to fall on the ground. “And… you are?”
“Detective Ambrose, but everybody calls me Amber Rose,” Amber answered while she gently held the cigarette between her index and middle fingers. “I’m from a Fable known as “The Burning Rose,” a tale that stars my brother and me.”
“What brother?” Bigby asked, looking at Amber with a raised eyebrow.
“… ah, shit!” Amber said upon sudden realization. “I left him back at the Trip-Trap Bar!! I’ll… erm, I’ll be back. You take Aka Manto to wherever the hell he’s supposed to be taken.”
“Are you sure you don’t want me to help you out?” Bigby asked as he gestures to Aka Manto. “He’s handcuffed to the light pole. I’m pretty sure the police will find him sooner than later.”
“Hey!” Aka Manto said with a glare that meant “don’t toy with me, ya damn wolf!”
“Well…,” Amber began as she deduced how far she ran. “I believe Edan tripped over the seat Aka Manto was sitting in, and he probably got lost… and I did burn a few things here and there…”
As she deduced it all, Bigby and she heard someone shouting "AMBER!!!" at the top of their lungs, making the woman sigh in frustration.
“Yeah, I might as well have you help,” Amber said as she began to walk towards the sound of the voice. “Besides, with your nose and my fire abilities, we could be one hell of a team.”
“Yeah, yeah…,” Bigby mumbled as he followed suit, leaving Aka Manto, who happens to still be handcuffed and at the light pole.
Tracing Amber’s steps back, Amber found a few of her burned marks on each obstacle while Bigby used his enhanced nose to find Amber’s brother. As soon as they turned the next corner, they find something that made them come to a halt: Edan stuck face-first in the trash can.
“Amber, help me!!” Edan shouted from the trashcan, causing the sister to sigh in frustration.
“Is… that your brother?” Bigby asked with a confused look as they walked to the trashcan.
“Sadly, yes…,” Amber said as she knocked the trashcan over, making her brother crawl out of the trashcan.
“Hey~!!” Edan exclaimed as he pulled the banana peel off his head, only to see Amber and Bigby. “Oh, sis. It’s you.”
“Bigby, this is Edan, “Amber began as she ignored her brother. “Edan, this is Bigby Wolf. Now that that’s settled, do you need any help at all, Sheriff?”
“Well, I was heading over to the Tenement Building located at South Bronx,” Bigby mumbled, remembering the reason why he’s out so late at night.
“Oh…,” Amber said with a frown, which immediately turned into a smile. “Can Edan and I accompany you?!”
“Eh?!” Edan said in surprised. “Why?!!”
“We’re detectives, Edan,” Amber said with a frown. “We have to at least help the Sheriff!”
“… well, all right,” Edan finally said as he got up and dusted himself off. “Let’s head out!”
“Before we do that…,” Bigby said as he pulled a cigarette and lit it up. “You might need to cover that smell.”
Confused, Edan smelled himself, only to scowl in disgust and cover his nose.
“G-Good point…,” Edan mumbled, pulling out cologne and spraying himself a few times.
“Not like that…,” Bigby mumbled with a scowl. “But I guess it’ll do…”
“Sorry…,” Edan said with a nervous smile as he scratched the back of his head.
“Well… let’s find that building!” Amber shouted as Bigby walked past her and Edan, heading to where he and Amber had first met.
With a shrug, Amber and Edan both followed behind Bigby.
As soon as they made it back to the streets, Amber raised a hand as if to call out a taxi. Once the taxi stopped, Edan opened the door and gestured Amber and Bigby to enter. Amber gestured Edan to get in first, which he did, then she entered after him. Bigby entered the taxi, and he shut the door. As if Edan had already told the driver where to head to, the taxi starts driving to the Tenement Building at South Bronx…
